Public Citizen, citing the underlying Wall Street Journal reporting, said a company backed by UAE national security adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bought 49% of World Liberty Financial for $500 million four days before Trump's inauguration and that $31 million was routed to entities associated with the Witkoffs. AP independently confirmed the $500 million UAE government-linked purchase. The White House and WLF denied that the separate UAE chips decision was connected to the later USD1 transaction.
